Key skills we focus on
Reading is the most important academic skill a child can learn. It is key in order to access different areas of the curriculum. No matter what stage your cuold is at, we will focus on reading as a priority.
In the early years of education, children focus on phonics as a key skill to decode words. We will identify which sounds your child needs to focus on and practise these along with blending skills to develop them as a reader.
Once your child is able to decode unknown words, the focus shifts to fluency and comprehension. We will then focus on developing fluency as a reader and practising the different skills needed to demonstrate understanding of a text. These include identifying key facts from the text, predicting skills and inference skills to name a few.
In maths we focus on developing fluency of the key maths facts. This includes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. Once these facts are in the long term memory, it allows space for conceptual thinking and understanding. We will identify which facts your child needs to focus on and practise these regularly.
Handwriting is a skill that needs to be developed over time so that children are able to form letters accurately, use correct sizing and begin to join their letters. We will identify your child's next steps and focus on these to develop their handwriting.
Spelling - From Year 1 onwards, children have a set list of common words that they need to be able to spell. These are words that don't follow the usual spelling patterns. We will identify which words your child need to practise and will work on these regularly.
